| FABRIC

Egyptian
cotton: fine, lustrous, extra long staple cotton
that was originally grown in Egypt. This durable cotton
is made of extra long fibers, 1-1/4 to 2 inch staple.
These staples can be spun into extremely fine thread;
thus, the resulting fabric can be woven with more threads
per square inch. Egyptian cotton fabric has a distinct
luster and silky hand. The most durable cotton, it softens
wash by wash.
percale: a tight weave
that is noticeably "tighter" than standard
fabric weaves. First woven in 1876 in New Bedford, Massachusetts,
percale, a medium weight fabric, is known for its durability.
Initially, percale starts with a crisp feel that softens
wash by wash.
thread count: number
of threads per one-square inch of fabric. In general,
with finer thread (e.g., Egyptian or Pima cotton), more
threads can be woven into each square inch, producing
a finer, softer, more flexible fabric that will wear
well and be less prone to shrinkage. Select bedding
based on the hand, or feel of the fabric, the cotton's
quality and the fabric's finish rather than thread count
alone as some manufacturers inflate their thread count
by counting the “ply” of thread rather than
simply counting each thread. |
